The Awesome Ambitions mission is to mentor young women in their efforts to define their own success, to plan how to achieve that success, and believe that they are capable of accomplishing and deserving of enjoying success
Awesome Ambitions is a free, not-for-profit, mentoring and college-readiness program for 8th through 12th grade girls in the Kansas City area. Professional women work side by side with our girls to help mentor them on the importance of getting a good education, exploring employment and career options, and learning about financial management, fitness and nutrition, leadership development and other life skills. This is accomplished through Saturday workshops, field trips, college visits and other events twice a month during the school year, that provide educational experiences, leadership, and support.
We are proud of our accomplishments. In 2013, 95% of the Awesome Ambitions seniors graduated on time, enrolled in college and were awarded more than $70,000 in scholarships. For some of our girls, this occurred in a school district that has struggled for full accreditation. Our graduates continue on to college, many being the first in their families to do so.

Helping in a Time of Change
The Kansas City Missouri School District is a working example of an institution improving education for urban scholars and the District continues its efforts to regain full accreditation through new programs and endeavors. Awesome Ambitions is recognized as a Community Partner of the school district and assists the administration in helping its scholars. This collaboration is greatly improving the opportunities our girls receive. Awesome Ambitions works to support our girls while working with the District to accomplish its educational and community goals.
Founded in 1997 by NBC, 41 Action News Anchor, Cynthia Newsome; and Co-Founder, Angela Curry, Retired Columnist with the Kansas City Star, Awesome Ambitions began in the Kansas City Missouri Public School District with 20 freshman girls from eight schools. Our “Awesome’’ young ladies today come from more than 14 area schools, including several charter and suburban school districts. The program is for girls of every race and religion regardless of their socioeconomic standing.
Girls who would benefit from our program:
Young women who need a mentor
Young women who have the potential to be successful, but need more encouragement and know that someone cares
Young women with untapped leadership potential
Young women who want to give back and pay it forward to the next generation
Young women who are diverse racially, ethnically, and religiously
Our mentors/volunteers encourage our young ladies to value education and themselves, to believe they deserve a better life. College and/or vocational training can be the key to a successful life of independence. Through our monthly Saturday workshops and special events, our mentors/volunteers provide educational guidance, leadership and other support.
